These skin conditions are all gut related. Here are some helpful Standard Process Products to consider:
Zypan -- 3-9/day (take after meals)
Indications: Indigestion, flatulence, constipation, ulcers, emaciation, anemia, poor calcium and iron absorption, halitosis parasitic prophylactic, foreign travel (sudden dietary changes)
Commentary: This is a Pepsin and Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) supplement. This type of
hydrochloric acid product works differently than antacids. The antacid is the wrong biochemistry, as it neutralizes one of the most important of all bodily secretions, hydrochloric acid. Zypan provides pepsin and HCL to aid the digestive process. In Guyton's Physiology, 7th edition, page 790, we read: "Pepsin, the important pepsic enzyme of the stomach, is most active at a pH of 2 or 3 (extremely acid) and is completely inactive at a pH above approximately 5 (an antacid can easily raise
pH to 6 or higher). Consequently, for this enzyme to cause any digestive action on protein, the stomach juices must be acidic... HCL is secreted by the parietal cells at a pH of about 0.8 but by the time it is mixed with the stomach contents with the secretions from the nonoxyntic glandular cells of the stomach the pH ranges around 2 to 3, a highly favorable range of acidity for pepsin activity. Pepsin is capable of digesting essentially all the different types of proteins in the diet. One of
the important features of pepsin digestion is its ability to digest collagen, an albuminoid that is affected little by other digestive enzymes of the digestive tract to penetrate meats and digest the cellular proteins, it is first necessary that the collagen fibers be digested. Consequently, in persons lacking peptic activity in the stomach, the ingested meats are less well penetrated by the digestive enzymes and, therefore, may be poorly digested." Guyton also warns of pernicious anemia
(potentially fatal form of anemia) from a stomach chronically low in HCL (hypo or achlorhydria).
Lactenz -- 3-9/day
Indications: Candidiasis, intestinal mucus, halitosis, toxemia, antibiotic adjunct
Commentary: This is the Standard Process probiotic product. The probiotics,
lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum, are for GI tract health, and to maintain a healthy balance of intestinal flora. Lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and acetic acid produced by these bacteria increase acidity of the intestine and inhibit the reproduction of many harmful bacteria. Probiotics are also important in recolonizing the intestine during and after antibiotic use. Probiotic supplements resupply the beneficial bacteria, preventing 50% of infections after
antibiotics.
Okra Pepsin E -- 2-6/day (formerly called Comfrey Pepsin E.)
Indications: Colitis, diverticulitis, ulcers, malabsorption syndrome, ileocecal valve problems. Breaks down mucous buildup covering villi on the intestinal wall. Cleanses the intestines and enhances gut absorption.
Commentary: The function of this product is to remove mucous from the walls of the small intestines and thereby enhance nutrient absorption through the intestinal wall into the blood. Okra is a very gooey and sticky mucilaginous (as is comfrey) green banana shaped vegetable grown mainly in the deep south of the U.S. The tacky okra sticks to the intestinal wall long enough to put the protein digesting (proteolytic) enzyme, pepsin, in contact with the
protein based mucous. The pepsin enzyme then breaks down the protein and thus destabilizes the mucous molecule. That causes the mucous to sluff off the intestinal wall and is eliminated in the stool. That in turn frees the villi (hair-like follicles) that line the intestinal wall enabling the villi to extract nutrients from the digesting food. Formerly comfrey root and leaf was used instead of okra. Concerns about alkaloids found in comfrey possibly toxic to the liver were raised by the FDA.
Although comfrey has been in herbal literature going back thousands of years to the Egyptians and ancient Chinese without a single mention of liver toxicity, it has become apparent that the FDA is seeking to control and limit herbs in healing. Comfrey is high on their "hit list". Comfrey promotes healing through its allantoin content which is also found in okra. For the purpose of a proper medium to put the pepsin enzyme on the intestinal wall, the Okra Pepsin is at least if not more effective.
Clinical trials support this.
AF Betafood -- 3-9/day
Indications: Gallbladder symptoms, liver disease, elevated cholesterol, hypoglycemia and elevated homocysteine levels.
Commentary: There are many sources of naturally occurring betaine in the plant world, but the greatest
source is the young growing beet leaves. Studies have shown that supplements containing naturally occurring betaine will help prevent against cirrhosis. Homocystine, a metabolite of the essential amino acid, methionine, cannot be converted to methionine without the participation of betaine. Without homocysteine being converted, it will help build in the blood causing fat accumulation and eventually cause damage to a number or organs and tissues. AF Betafood is a gallbladder and liver
decongestant, supports fat metabolism, thinning and mobilization of bile and assists in the conversion of blood fat to sugar.
Livaplex -- 3-6/day
Indications: Liver detoxification, fat metabolism, general liver support, hepatitis
Commentary: Livaplex is a special formula
product containing a combination of ingredients from AF Betafood, Hepatrophin PMG, Betacol, Spanish Black Radish, Chezyn and Antronex. This product is especially effective because of its synergistic combination of ingredients, as well as their combined systemic functions. AF Betafood helps detoxify the liver by thinning and expelling the bile. The beet leaf juice in AF Betafood also provides methyl donors and other nutrients needed for storage and release of glycogen from the liver. Hepatrophin
PMG provides the specific protomorphogens useful for repair of liver tissue. Betacol is primarily a liver detoxifier which provides an "antistiffness" factor once known as the Wulzen Factor. Spanish Black Radish is simply the defibered and dehydrated root of this highly acclaimed radish. Known throughout Eastern Europe as a liver tonic. Spanish Black Radish is high in lignin, potassium, sodium and iron, as well as sulfur and vitamin C. Functionally it is diuretic and enhances the appetite and
digestion, and cleanses the liver and gallbladder. However its most important function as part of Livaplex is in the prevention of constipation. Chezyn is a source of the trace minerals zinc, copper and iron, chelated to liver tissue. These trace minerals take part in the thousands of enzymatic reactions within the liver and enhance the liver's ability to function normally and to repair itself. The requirement for trace mienrals can go up dramatically during cellular repair. Antronex is an
important addition to Livaplex because of its affect on hepatic circulation. Blood flow through the liver is increased because of the Yakriton content in Antronex. The antihistaminic qualities of Antronex are also important in helping reduce liver congestion and associated high blood pressure.
